1 行目は 8 桁にそろえた形式のバージョン番号であり、旧形式のアーカイブはすべて B<0.939000> である。

2 行目はひとつ目の gzip 圧縮 tar ファイルの大きさを意味する (0 から始まらない) 十進数の数値文字列である。

それぞれの行の終わりには改行文字がひとつ置かれる。

1 番目の tar ファイルは、制御情報を含む幾つかの平文ファイルからなる。中核となる制御情報を含む B<control> ファイルは必須である。
