Numbering for Headings
Use the dialog to add numbering to headings. The different levels in the dialog enable you to assign different headings as an outline structure for your document. In the default settings, the “Heading 1” paragraph style is assigned outline level 1. It is considered to be the top level in the document outline structure. The “Heading 2” paragraph style is assigned outline level 2, and so forth. You can also use the dialog to assign a custom paragraph style as a heading in the document structure.
To Add Automatic Numbering to a Heading
Choose , and then click the tab.Select the to configure.In the box, select the paragraph style for the selected level.In the box, select the numbering scheme that you want to use for that heading, then click OK.
To Remove Automatic Numbering From a Heading
Click at the beginning of the text in the heading paragraph, after the number.Press the Backspace key to delete the number.Press Shift+Backspace with the cursor at the beginning of the heading to return the number.This procedure removes the numbering for an individual heading. To remove or modify the automatic numbering for all headings, use the dialog .
To Use a Custom Paragraph Style as a Heading
Choose , and then click the tab.Click the level that you want to assign to the custom paragraph style in the list.Select the custom style in the Paragraph Style box.Click OK.
