The Backspace traditionally deletes character before the cursor and the Del deletes characters after the cursor, however this is not always the case. To reduce ambiguity, you can specify in Terminal which control character or escape sequence the delete and backspace keys should generate. You can set different options for different profiles.

Backspace key compatbility

Open Edit Preferences.

Your current profile is selected in the sidebar. If you wish to edit a different profile, click on its name.

Select Compatibility.

From the menu for Backspace key generates, you can select from the following options:

Automatic

Control-H

ASCII DEL

Escape sequence

TTY Erase

Your preference is saved immediately. Click Close to quit the dialog and return to Terminal.

Delete key compatibility

Open Edit Preferences.

Your current profile is selected in the sidebar. If you wish to edit a different profile, click on its name.

Select Compatibility.

From the menu for Backspace key generates, you can select from the following options:

Automatic

Control-H

ASCII DEL

Escape sequence

TTY Erase

Your preference is saved immediately. Click Close to quit the dialog and return to Terminal.

Reset compatibility options

To reset compatibility options for Backspace and Delete keys:

Open Edit Preferences.

Your current profile is selected in the sidebar. If you wish to edit a different profile, click on its name.

Select Compatibility.

Click on Reset Compatibility Options to Defaults.

Compatibility options are immediately reset to defaults. Click Close to quit the dialog and return to Terminal.
