Ekaterina Gerasimova kittykat3756@gmail.com 2014–2015 Choose whether to open a new window or a new tab by default. Windows and tabs

This setting only applies when the menubar is enabled, or when Terminal is started from the command line and neither the --tab nor the --window options are passed.

You can choose whether to open a new tab or a new Terminal window when you use New Terminal.

If the menubar is enabled,

Select EditPreferences General.

Set Open new terminals in: to Tab or Window.

If the menubar is not enabled,

Press the menu button in the top-right corner of the window and select Preferences.

In the sidebar, select General.

Set Open new terminals in: to Tab or Window.

Once you have set the preference, you can use Ctrl to invert the preference. For example, if you have your preferences set to open a new terminal in a new tab, then pressing New Terminal will open a new tab. On the other hand, if you hold down Ctrl and then press New Terminal, then a new window will be opened instead.
